Application of Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act to TikTok

On January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump issued Executive Order 14166, which temporarily halts the enforcement of the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act concerning TikTok. The Act restricts the distribution and maintenance of applications controlled by foreign adversaries, specifically targeting TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance Ltd., due to national security concerns. This executive order pauses enforcement for 75 days, allowing the administration time to assess national security implications and explore solutions that protect security interests while maintaining access to the platform for 170 million American users. The Attorney General is instructed not to enforce the Act during this period, ensuring no penalties are imposed for noncompliance.
