President Donald Trump issued this determination to treat key electric grid equipment and the supply chains behind it as essential to national defense under Section 303 of the Defense Production Act. The memo says the United States lacks enough domestic capacity to quickly produce items like transformers, transmission components, substations, circuit breakers, electrical steel, and related manufacturing tools, leaving the country too dependent on foreign sources and vulnerable during emergencies.
